Making the transition from classical music to classical painting was not such a big conceptual leap for me.  Both art forms demand years of serious training and analysis. After doing Alla-Prima painting (direct painting) I became interested in the classical method of constructing a painting in layers.  After the design stage of several drawings, an ‘under-painting’ in monochromatic tones is created; over which layers of color glazes and impasto in the lights are added. This way I’m able to create the desired luminosity and rich effects that hopefully result. Bringing the Old Master approach to contemporary subjects I find interesting. Currently teaching Renaissance/Baroque painting methods at Oregon Society of Artists. His project MusArt is an exhibition of 40 oil paintings of musicians around the world combining live music, Haiku poetry, film with original music by Grammy winning composer, a published book, and an orchestra instruments tree.

Randall Vemer, Principal Viola and Soloist of the Oregon Symphony  from 1976-1995, assumed the position at age 22 just before graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. While at Oberlin, he changed his major from violin to viola.  He was Principal Viola of the Portland Opera for several years, and performed with several international ballet companies (Joffrey, Ballet West, Royal Canadian Ballet, Houston, etc.), popular singers (Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Judy Collins, Smokey Robinson, etc.), and Broadway musical theater companies who came through Portland.  Randall performed 5X as viola soloist in Harold in Italy under James DePreist and The Oregon Symphony, which was recorded and broadcast locally and nationwide on Public Radio in 1992. He has performed throughout the US, France, Italy, and Spain.
